So yeah, I’m talking about this here on Tumblr because Facebook is way too filled with manure to discuss something like this (and because I’m way too lazy to actually argue hahaha).
Everybody knows that Brazil is going to host the FIFA World Cup in 2014 (And I’m both excited and apprehensive), I didn’t know this but, there’s always a couple that hosts the groups’ draw. The first choice was Camila Pitanga and Lázaro Ramos, the ones on the bottom of the picture. For whatever (whatever? really?) reason they decided to change this and now the host couple is Fernanda Lima and Rodrigo Hilbert.
If the second couple was chosen since the beggining it would be ok but no, they chose to ditch a couple of people of color to put a white couple. It enrages me that are some people here in Brazil that say they can represent the face of Brazil as well as the first couple, they’re partially right, Brazil is purely miscegenation, we have -everything- here and we’re all Brazilians.
Be we need to work our critical thinking of which etnicity is the most representative and sorry, it isn’t white. I’m white (slavic-italian mostly), I get really pissed if a stuck up from the *~first world~* calls me a latina because, aside of my surname, I have nothing that vagely resembles the ‘usual’ latino, I’m pretty aware of my priviledge of being this way, and knowing that, I’m more than sure I don’t represent the true face of Brazil.
This is a clear case of racism and it enrages me how white people, that have no right to point what is and what isn’t racism, are whining that nowadays everything is racism, that it’s simple matter of choice they find the white couple better or prettier.
No, it isn’t, look at magazines, tv, everywhere. Sometimes I think I live in Norway because all I see are white people with their light eyes and blonde hair and BRAZIL ISN’T LIKE THIS. Miss Brazil is a great example, we had like 2 black misses? Yeah, talk about racism.
(CORRECTING, it’s even more enraging, Deise Nunes was the ONLY black miss)
I was so disappointed when I saw the news about the change of Camilla and Lazaro. They are both great actors, and I have a crush on her, one of most beautiful actress of our country. Anyway…
People here always say that Brazil has no prejudice about anything, specially racism, and this isn’t the truth. Everyday I read news about cases like that, a black woman who was neglected by an hospital, a boy who can’t be matriculated in a school because of his hair… And then, as we can see, World Cup 2014 is just a reflection of the hypocrisy we have here everyday. :(
